What to expect when playing U.S. college basketball:
Fall Semester
- Swimming is a year-round sport, with athletes competing in tournaments throughout the U.S. school year.
- Events are held between early-September and late-March.
- Athletes may have practice or tournaments scheduled during winter break, as the season is held across two semesters.
- You can expect approximately 12 events in an average season.
Spring Semester
- The off-season for college swimming is between the end of the spring semester and the beginning of the fall semester.
- You can expect to practice a maximum of 8 hours a week during the off-season, and up to 20 hours per week during the competitive season.
- In addition to training, you will be required to complete weight lifting and conditioning on a regular basis in preparation for competitions.
Women’s swimming programs all over the U.S. participate under all governing bodies and divisions.
NCAA
The NCAA endorses three divisions of women’s collegiate swimming and diving.
Division I
- Currently sponsor 195 women’s swimming and diving programs
- 14 full swimming scholarships and diving scholarships are available per women’s team
Division II
- Currently sponsor 103 women’s swimming and diving programs
- 8.1 full swimming scholarships and diving scholarships are available per women’s team
Division III
- Currently sponsor 258 women’s swimming and diving programs
- Financial aid is available but is not considered swimming scholarship or diving scholarship
NJCAA
The NJCAA endorses three divisions of women’s collegiate swimming and diving.
- Currently sponsor 68 women’s swimming and diving programs across three divisions
- 15 full swimming scholarships and diving scholarships are available across all divisions
NAIA
The NAIA endorses one division of women’s collegiate swimming and diving.
- Currently sponsor 27 women’s swimming programs
- 8 full swimming scholarships and diving scholarships are available per women’s team
