What to expect when playing U.S. college field hockey:
Fall Semester
- Field Hockey is a Fall sport, played at the start of the U.S. school year.
- Games are usually played between late August and early November.
- You can expect to play approximately 20 games in an average season.
Spring Semester
- The off-season for college field hockey is during the Spring semester.
- You can expect to practice a maximum of 8 hours a week during the off-season.
- In addition to skill training, you will be required to complete weight lifting and conditioning in preparation for competitions.
Women’s field hockey programs all over the U.S. participate under 1 governing body and 3 divisions.
NCAA
NCAA – National Collegiate Athletic Association
The NCAA endorses three divisions of women’s collegiate field hockey.
Division I
- Currently sponsor 78 women’s field hockey programs
- 12 full field hockey scholarships are available per women’s field hockey team
Division II
- Currently sponsor 35 women’s field hockey programs
- 6.3 full field hockey scholarships are available per women’s field hockey team
Division III
- Currently sponsor 165 women’s field hockey programs
- Financial aid is available but is not considered field hockey scholarship
