We are already one month into 2023, which means things are well under way for this new year! One of the most important aspects of the student-athlete pathway is time and ensuring that you have enough of it in order to be successful.

However, knowing if you have enough time, or when you should start this process, are two of the most frequent questions we receive. This blog will cover three of the most important reasons why the best time to start this process is NOW!

Academic Advisement

Your high school academics are a hugely important part of this process, as mentioned in one of our latest blog posts. Getting guidance on the academic side of things early on is critical to ensure you are doing the right things while you still have time to make necessary changes.

When working with KAA, your academic advisement is the very first thing that we do in order to ensure that you can keep doing what you’re doing, or, whether we need to make some changes.

This academic advisement focuses on four aspects, including:

Athletic Development

Naturally, your success and development athletically are hugely linked to your success in being recruited to be a student-athlete and gaining a scholarship. Therefore, it is important that intentional and rigorous involvement in your sport begins as early as possible.

Starting this process early will ensure that your agent can guide you into:

  • Participating at a level that coaches will see as valuable
  • Setting goals that are in line with the American standards of your sport
  • Ensuring you have a record of your past achievements
  • Begin gathering film and creating several highlight videos for you

Coaches are going to look to award athletes with scholarships based on their perception of your talent, potential, and value in relation to their team specifically. As an international athlete, one of the most difficult parts is ensuring that your talent, potential, and value are conveyed without a coach being able to see you compete in person.

This is something that needs to be thought about early on and can be optimised by KAA agents helping you with this along the way.

Coach Communications

One of the most overlooked reasons why starting this process early is important, is so that coach communications can begin!

Coaches in the U.S. will be watching athletes the same age as you are competing in high school competitions, regional talent camps, and at college recruit identification meets, etc. In summary, us internationals are on the back foot!

Being able to get your name out there as a potential recruit is so important! This way you can keep them updated on your results, progress, team selections etc., so they can compare you to those athletes they are able to see in person.

Disclaimer: There are rules around how early a coach can contact you. So, working with KAA is a huge asset to this part of the process, as it allows coaches to stay updated and informed on your progress before they are “allowed” to speak with you personally.

So, How do I Get Started?

Now reading some of the reasons why it is important to get started, the next question to ask is how? Ensuring you are educated about this pathway is the most important step to ensuring your success in the recruiting process.

The agents at KAA offer a 1-hour free consultation to discuss what this pathway consists of, sharing their experiences as a student-athlete, and will help to decipher whether this experience is the right one for you!

After this consultation, KAA will guide you through everything in this process… academic advisement, goal setting, coach communications, scholarship negotiations, and everything in between!
